You’ve got your skin care routine on lockdown, tried and tested many different beauty products, but somehow, your skin just won’t cooperate. Maybe it’s time to look beyond the products you’ve been slathering on your face and consider your lifestyle. Have you been eating too much unhealthy processed food? When was the last time you’ve exercised? Your skin problems might just be beyond the expensive products you use.
1. Stay Hydrated
Sometimes, when we’re too busy throughout the day, we forget to drink water. Making sure you drink water throughout the day is a good habit to practice as water replenishes your skin moisture levels to maintain elasticity and prevent wrinkles from forming. If you’re notoriously forgetful or get too engrossed in your work, set reminders to remind yourself or download an app that does all that for you!
2. You Are What You Eat
I know what you’re thinking, how is changing your diet an easy lifestyle change? You don’t have to go on a full-blown diet, just swap out unhealthy food for healthier options. For example, opt for low-fat or soy milk the next time you order that frappuccino from Starbucks. Instead of buying fruit juice with added sugar and sweeteners, why not just eat the fruit? Choose balsamic and olive oil dressing instead of processed salad dressing. There are so many simple food swaps you can make, so no more excuses!
3. Don’t Skip the Sunscreen
Sun damage from UV rays is one of the main causes of skin ageing, as well as the leading cause of skin cancer. Prolonged exposure to the sun results in discolouration, dry skin, sunspots, and wrinkles. This sun exposure builds up over time, it may not be apparent now, but the effects will appear as you age. That’s why it’s important to invest in a good sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays for complete protection from the harmful sun rays.
4. Stress Less
When you’re stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol which can lead to those dreaded skin breakouts, high levels of inflammation, and premature ageing. If you’re experiencing high levels of stress, take a step back and breathe. Try to incorporate some stress-relieving activities such as yoga, meditation, and exercise. If these activities don’t work for you, it’s okay! Find out what reduces your stress levels and do that instead. Including some me-time in your daily routine is also essential for your peace of mind.
5. Beauty Sleep
How many times have you said “just one more episode”, only to stay up the whole night? If you’ve been neglecting your sleep, it’s time to change that. Lack of sleep affects your appearance, causing dark circles and undereye bags. Sleep helps to rejuvenate the skin and balance hydration levels, on top of repairing damaged cells. Get a good night’s sleep by staying away from screens an hour before bedtime and avoiding caffeine in the evening.
